Update
Irene wearing her Muffin’s Halo. It was donated by Silvie Bordeaux and Second Chances for Blind Dogs. Now that she has her angel wings, where is that runway?
Backstory
“Irene was found in a ditch and turned in to Hillsborough County Animal Services. She was emaciated with demodex and hardly any hair, infections in both ears, a heart murmur requiring medication to keep her heart from putting pressure on her trachea and causing her to make horrible choking sounds, and she developed vestibular disease possibly from the medication so she has dizziness and walks in circles and falls down when she has an episode.
She is blind from severe cataracts and has little hearing. She was rescued by Aussie and Me in Sarasota and I have been fostering her for 2 months trying to get her healthy enough to be adopted. Once her health issues were addressed her well being and activity level have increased dramatically.
Her hair has grown back and she is beautiful again, and is a bundle of energy. the biggest problem I have with her now is that I can’t let her have free run of the house without supervision because she bumps into everything like a pinball in a machine. She is a herding dog, so she goes constantly and never stops.
She gets stuck behind furniture and can’t get out, she runs into my other two dogs which are greyhounds that are 2 and 3 times her size, and I am also afraid if she spooks them that they will snap at her and I don’t want her to get hurt. She has run into plants in the yard that have poked her in the face. I never let her out without a leash but she pulls suddenly sometimes and gets a little closer to a plant or a branch than she should.
I don’t think it is going to be easy to find a permanent home for her due to her blindness, so she may be with me for a while. I have already spent quite a bit of money on her, and can’t continue to neglect my own dogs because of her needs, but have to make sure she has the necessities. One of her meds that I had to get for her skin was $187.00 alone.
This dog is the absolute sweetest, most docile, well behaved little girl you could imagine. I feel bad that she has to be so restricted in my home because I am not set up to accommodate her needs. I work full time, but even when I am home I have two other dogs to attend to and the usual household responsibilities so I can’t give her constant supervision.
