Backstory
Nemo’s had a real rough year and going blind is just one obstacle. See late last year after we moved into our new home we started noticing Nemo walking around slowly and cautiously. Then he started to bump into things. We knew that something was wrong. So he saw his vet who referred us to a local ophthalmologist who after examination determined he had retinal dystrophy in both of his eyes and on top of that he had cataracts in both eyes. If he just had cataracts he could have possibly had surgery and his eyesight could have been saved but since he had retinal dystrophy in both eyes he was going to lose his sight. It was just a matter of time. About 6 months later he pretty much lost his sight. He can still see some light but that’s it. Nemo losing his sight makes me really sad because this dog loved seeing things. When we went for walks which he absolutely loved he would look around just taking in everything he saw. When we went on drives he would look out the window checking out everything going by. He loved looking out the window to get a glimpse of a cat or squirrel or birds. He was a very visual dog and him losing his site has been hard on him. Now when he walks he struggles because he’s scared. He was getting better but then just A few months ago we started noticing him hardly eating and not having much of an appetite. We also noticed other things but we were not sure if it had something to do with him losing his sight. After many vet visits and many tests it was determined he had a mass on his small intestine. He went into surgery four weeks ago to remove the mass. It was the only way they could test it to see if it was cancer. The surgery was tough on him. He lost quite a bit of weight and we had a hard time getting him to eat. The incision was rather large on his abdomen. He was in pain and just felt awful. A few days after the surgery we found out the mass was cancer. They do believe they removed the entire mass but they are afraid it will come back. So right now we have been struggling with figuring out the best way to treat Nemo. And in the meantime through all of this he’s blind and he does not understand why everything is happening to him. But he is getting better. It would be great if he didn’t have to bump into things anymore. It would be great to see him have his confidence back. Here’s my little guy. He is 11 years old and he’s my baby. I love Nemo so very much. He also has a little sister that is 9 years old and she’s doing pretty good thank goodness. Anyways I just wanted to share Nemo story. He’s one special little guy!
