Backstory
This is my boy Max, he is almost 11 years old, but I have only had him for a little over a year. Max’s story is a sad one. His previous owners left him outside in February, in a snow storm here in Maryland. His owners left him in the storm for 3 hours before looking for him. When he was brought into the hospital I worked at we thought he was dead. He was limp, heart barely beating, and a temperature so low it wouldn’t even register on the thermometer.
He was hospitalized for a few days and was not improving as much as was expected, the owners decided to euthanize him. Our doctor stepped in and asked if we could run some tests and find out if there were underlying issues, they agreed. After extensive lab work it was determined Max had Addison’s disease, where his body doesn’t make enough steroids to support itself. Stressful things (like being left in a snow storm) can trigger an Addisonian crisis. They decided they didn’t “want to deal with it”. So he came home with me. Max gets a steroid pill every day, an injection of steroids every month and frequent blood work.
I also had to get him neutered, have a dental for his rotten teeth and joint supplements for his knee that’s almost always out of place. He’s been do well, then just a month or two ago he started bumping into things in dim light. The eye specials was our next costly visit. They thought he might have a brain tumor, luckily he was diagnosed with SARDS, no brain tumor for my little man!!
In a period of about ten days Max went totally blind. All of these things have happened in the 18 months that I’ve had him, but he’s so worth it!!!
