Update
“Gnataliegh Rose Petal, known as Petal, is a very tiny and very active blind Yorkie. She came to us as a foster from the Humane Society of Southeast Texas because she needed a place to heal. We have since adopted her. She was malnourished and both of her eyes were being treated for ulcers. Coming into an unknown environment and being blind was not easy for her. She smacked her little face on furniture and walls. We were told to protect her eyes for fear they would rupture. Consequently, we found ourselves holding her almost constantly for fear she would hurt herself.
I went online and did a great deal of research. Though I had heard about Muffin’s Halo at the Humane Society, I wasn’t really informed. After researching, I was certain this was Petal’s chance at some independence.
Through the kind hearts and funds from Second Chances for Blind Dogs, Petal received her halo. She now has more freedom to explore the house and learn her way around. It also helps her to be recognized as a special dog when we go out in public, and people approach her more carefully than before. This Halo has been such a blessing for Petal.
In addition to Petal, we have another little dog, a senior blind poodle. We first fostered Miss Daisy from the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, and then we adopted her. We don’t know Miss Daisy’s story. She was found as a stray on the streets. She is thought to be about 11 years old, only has three teeth, and cataracts on both eyes. When we brought her to our home, she immediately attached herself to another of our dogs, Gumbeaux. We decided Gumbeaux was Miss Daisy’s seeing eye dog. She followed him everywhere. Our little Gumbeaux died, and Miss Daisy was so lost. Though she learned the house with Gumbeaux’s help, we noticed lately that she is having some trouble.
Recently, Miss Daisy received a Halo from Umbrella of Hope. She took to it right away. Now she, also, has more freedom.
Both Miss Daisy and Petal “speak” for the Humane Society of Southeast Texas educating the public on adopting blind and senior dogs. Wearing their Halos, people can see what is out there to aid blind dogs.”
Backstory
Petal was abandoned in a kennel at a local pet supply store and discovered by an employee. She was malnourished weighing in at 2.7 pounds and had ulcers in both eyes. They bathed her, fed her, and then turned her over to our local Humane Society. We received a call from them saying they had a blind dog with both eyes stitched shut, and they needed a quiet home for her to recuperate in. Would we foster her?
We are friends of the shelter, adopted a blind dog from them last Dec. , are retired, and have a quiet household. They thought we would be the perfect home. We immediately agreed.
After being treated by a local vet, she was recommended to a specialist in hopes of saving the left eye from being removed. So far, improvement is being seen, though there is no chance of sight. It is important that the eye is protected from being ruptured.
We have to watch her like hawks because she tends to bump into things. I found Muffin’s Halo while doing research on blind dogs. This is when I also saw some donations were made. We are retired and on a fixed income, but we are determined to give this tiny girl a chance of a good life. This is why we are asking for your help for Petal.
