Backstory
“Mercy is an 11 year old Boston Terrier. I rescued her from a puppy mill when she was about 3 –months old. Due to her markings and a problem with her eye, she was considered a “reject” and couldn’t be sold. Mercy was diagnosed with dry eye.
Mercy is a therapy dog. For many years, she would go to work with me when I worked the night shift at a memory care unit. She knew who needed her company and who wanted her to keep her distance. She even had her own “employee” file.

July 29, 2012, my brother passed away unexpectedly. Ten days later on August 8th, my dad passed away unexpectedly. The day my dad passed, I received contaminated steroid injections. Approximately 2 months later I was hospitalized for sixteen days with Fungal Meningitis due to the injections.
During my hospitalization, Mercy was being cared for by my mom and was attacked by coyotes. We live in a rural area and people were illegally dumping fish and deer remains on our property. At the time, we were unaware that this was happening or that we even had a problem with coyotes. To everyone’s dismay, Mercy survived her attack and we were both discharged from the hospital and able to recover together. Mercy had several injuries including losing most of the tendons in her front feet/legs, puncture wounds, and scarring on her eyes. Every time the vet sees her, he reminds me that she’s a little miracle. She’s such a trooper. She allowed us do her painful dressing changes twice a day. I think Mercy understood I needed her more than ever at the time. I had gone through and lost so much, I couldn’t bear the thought of losing her too.
She has adjusted quite well to her injuries and doesn’t complain at all. As the vet says, “She is such a sweet little old lady”. We have been through so much together, I can’t imagine my life without her.
This past December I had to have surgery. Due to unexpected complications, I needed more time off from work than originally anticipated. When my FMLA was exhausted, my employer chose to terminate my employment after 12 years of service.
Recently, I’ve noticed Mercy’s vision seems to have gotten worse and she is having difficulty maneuvering through the house. Normally it wouldn’t be an issue to pay the retail cost for a Halo for Mercy, but due to my recent circumstances it’s not something I can do at this time. I would gladly make a donation to your non-profit once I am able!
