“Today was visit the veterinarian day for wellness checks and vaccinations and he wore his halo in, none of the veterinarians or staff members had ever seen or heard of a halo, and the veterinarian I saw has a blind and deaf basset hound. Backstory
“Little Man and his lady friend Millie were owned by an elderly woman in San Diego, CA. I became aware of them in December 2014 as I knew the woman’s grandson. I felt bad for them when I met them in December as they had a comforter to sleep on but really no human interaction.
Their nails were long and curling under so I imagine it was painful walking, even though they weren’t my dogs and I hadn’t known them very long, I took over their care as I am a huge animal lover and had 3 rescue dogs at home.
I took Little Man and Millie to the vet’s and got them updated on shots, I took them to the groomers, got them coats for cold days to wear, and got them on better dog food than the cheap stuff from the local grocery store.
When the elderly owner passed away in January 2013, her children fought over her possessions (everything but the dogs) when I asked who was going to take the dogs, the one daughter said her plan was to euthanize them as they were 1) old dogs 2) they weren’t poodles 3) they weren’t papered and 4) Little Man was special needs (blind) and she didn’t want that responsibility.
I knew they had life still left to live, and since I had already stepped up within the prior 6 weeks and taken over their care, it was a no-brainer. I knew I was taking them home with me to live and I hoped that it would be a smooth transition into my pack of 3 rescues at home.
They now have a 6 ft fully fenced yard to sniff and roam in. They have full run of the house, they get treats, warm beds (although they all sleep in momma’s bed), regular grooming and vet care, car rides and outings to local parks, beaches and just neighborhood walks. And because Little Man isn’t confident about walking long distances due to age and no visibility, to ensure he still feels like part of the family, he rides in a wagon when we go on pack walks.”
