“LuLu came to us as an emergency foster in August 2011. His previous owner knew he was diabetic but did not treat him for 2 years. Finally, on deaths door, she took him to be euthanized. The doctor called the rescue instead and they called us to ask if we could try to rehabilitate him. When he got to us he weighed only 5 pounds and was having diabetic seizures. It was a pretty rough first few days for him, we thought we were losing him more than once.
He is now a very happy and healthy 12 pounds. When he came to us he was deaf, we think from birth, but otherwise was pretty normal once his diabetes was under control. He gets three or four small meals a day and insulin injections are like clockwork. In the first year that he was with us as a foster he started developing cataracts in both eyes and they progressed very quickly and became almost completely blind within a few months. In 2014 LuLu had cataract removal surgery that failed. One eye was too damaged to even do surgery and the eye they did do was too damaged to restore any vision. That eye eventually needed to be removed a couple months later. Despite his rough start, blindness, deafness and diabetes, he is still one of the happiest dogs ever. Loving, sweet, attentive, cuddly and exceptionally high spirited.”
